Benfica win emotional Classico amid Eusebio tributes

dimanche 12 janvier 2014

Benfica won a league match against arch-rivals Porto for the first time in more than four years on Sunday, beating them 2-0 on an emotional afternoon marked by tributes to their former forward Eusebio.

Goals in each half from Rodrigo and Ezequiel Garay took Benfica top of the table with 36 points, two ahead of Sporting with champions Porto a further point behind in third.

Benfica's players all wore the name of Eusebio rather than their own on the back of their shirts and synchronised placards produced a huge image in the stands of the player nicknamed the 'Black Panther', who died on Jan. 5 aged 71.

There was also a minute's silence before the game for the Mozambique-born player who was the top-scorer at the 1966 World Cup with nine goals that helped Portugal reach the semi-finals and inspired Benfica to 11 domestic titles.

The Eagles went ahead in the 13th minute when they won possession in midfield, Lazar Markovic burst forward and fed Rodrigo who fired his shot past Helton.

Jackson Martinez nearly levelled for Porto in first-half stoppage time but the result was never in doubt after Ezequiel Garay headed Benfica's second following a corner in the 53rd minute.

Porto's frustration boiled over when Brazilian right back Danilo was sent off after being given a second yellow card for diving in the penalty area in what seemed a harsh decision.

Benfica last beat Porto in the league in December 2009 with five wins for Porto and two draws in the seven meetings since then.

Ibrahimovic sets up two as PSG move five clear in Ligue 1

samedi 11 janvier 2014

Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic set up both goals as Paris St Germain recovered to snatch a 2-1 win at bottom side AC Ajaccio that put the champions five points clear in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

The big-spending visitors went behind in the sixth minute when Eduardo scored for the Corsicans, only for Ezequiel Lavezzi and Blaise Matuidi to find the net each side of the interval to lift PSG to 47 points from 20 games ahead of Monaco.

The only black mark for PSG was that Ibrahimovic, who has eight assists to go with 15 league goals in 19 appearances, will get a one-game ban for his third yellow card in four matches.

Second-placed principality club Monaco have 42 points after being held to a 1-1 draw at lowly Montpellier on Friday.

Ajaccio, who have only won one league game this season and are now nine points off the safety zone, went ahead when Eduardo tapped in after Benjamin Andre's fluffed effort in the area.

PSG increased the pressure but were denied by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who kept out Lavezzi from close range, while Ibrahimovic's powerful free kick hit the post on the half-hour.

However, there was nothing Ochoa could do four minutes from the break when Lavezzi slotted the ball home after collecting Ibrahimovic's back pass in the box.

Ajaccio were on the back foot but still looked dangerous on the break with PSG keeper Salvatore Sirigu tipping away Eduardo's low cross-shot in the 65th minute.

With an embarrassing draw looming, PSG manager Laurent Blanc sent on Javier Pastore and Lucas for Alex and Lavezzi in the 72nd minute, a move that paid dividends moments later.

Pastore, who has only showed glimpses of his talent since joining from Palermo in 2011, had an immediate impact as the Argentine unsettled the Ajaccio defence in the 74th with a brilliant dribble followed by a fine pass to Ibrahimovic.

The Swede headed the ball into the path of Matuidi, who sealed all three points with a diving header.

De Villiers set to face Australia despite hand surgery

vendredi 10 janvier 2014

South Africa wicketkeeper AB de Villiers will undergo hand surgery on Friday, but is expected to be fit for the upcoming series against Australia, a Cricket South Africa spokesman said on Thursday.

De Villiers will have a plate in his hand removed after it started to cause him discomfort, in a delayed procedure announced a week ago.

The plate was inserted after he suffered a break in the Indian Premier League two years ago.

"The recovery period is usually three to four weeks and he should be ready in time for the series against Australia in February," said South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee.

South Africa are resting key fast bowler Dale Steyn, who suffered a small fracture in his rib in last month's test win over India in Durban, so that he can also be fit for the series.

South Africa will play three tests and three Twenty20 internationals against Australia, with the first test starting in Pretoria on Feb. 12.

Both teams are in good form after South Africa won a two-match series against India 1-0 last month and Australia completed a one-sided 5-0 triumph over England in the Ashes.

Too many foreign coaches in England, says Mourinho

dimanche 5 janvier 2014

There are too many foreign coaches in the Premier League and British candidates should be given more opportunities, Chelsea's Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has said.

"In this moment in the Premier League - and I'm speaking against myself - I disagree with so many foreign coaches in this country," Mourinho told British media.

"I don't see a reason for that because I don't feel the English managers are in any point behind the foreign ones.

"But I think if there are no jobs in the country as a manager or a player then you have to go (abroad) because this is a short professional life. So go and enjoy. You always have the chance to come back as a manager and a player."

There are now nine foreign managers from outside Britain and Ireland in the top flight after Cardiff City this week named Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to replace Scot Malky Mackay. There were none in 1992 when the Premier League was launched.

West Bromwich Albion have been considering appointing a Spaniard, ex-Osasuna manager Jose Luis Mendilibar, to succeed another sacked Scot Steve Clarke, British media have reported.

"I have to say, the ones that are coming, and I can analyse (them) one by one, all of them are good coaches and good people and they try to do good jobs for them and for their clubs," Mourinho was quoted as saying in The Independent on Sunday.

"So I'm not saying these people are not top people or people that don't deserve to be here the same way I deserve to be here. I just feel sorry that in a football country like England, that is the country of so many managers, they (British managers) are not getting enough jobs in this country.

"At the end of the day, influence from abroad is good, you can learn the differences from other cultures, but I think the main culture has to be always the English, or in this case the British culture," he added.

Mourinho believes more British coaches should go abroad to develop their skills and he praised Derby County's former England coach Steve McClaren, whose in-form Championship (second division) side host Chelsea in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

"If you ask me, the first thing that comes to my memory about Steve is not being the England manager but being a champion in Holland. So I think he did well...," he said, referring to McClaren's 2010 league triumph with Twente FC.

"In this country people shouldn't be afraid to be a bit adventurous, like other coaches from other nationalities are," added Mourinho, who is in his second stint at Chelsea, having initially joined the club from Porto in 2004 before then managing Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

"In Portugal, people say there are lots of Portuguese coaches working abroad and I opened the door for them. People are not afraid to go and find a future in other countries."

England batsmen backing off is a ploy, says Johnson

jeudi 2 janvier 2014

Mitchell Johnson believes England's batsmen repeatedly pulling away just before the ball is delivered during the Ashes series is a deliberate ruse to unsettle Australia's pace bowlers.

Johnson, whose pace bowling has helped Australia to a 4-0 lead in the series, got into a row with Kevin Pietersen in the fourth test over the practise, slinging the ball towards the England batsman before exchanging heated words.

"The only thing I regret is throwing the ball," Johnson told reporters at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

"I think that was probably a little bit inappropriate but the rest of it was fine.

"I just let (Pietersen) know that he needed to stop doing it. The sight screens are big enough, he should be watching the game."

Batsmen do have the right to stand away from the wicket before a ball is bowled if they are distracted by movement in the crowd.

"That's how they play the game and have always played the game since I've been playing," Johnson said.

"It's always happened so I don't think they'll change ... it definitely is frustrating when it happens all the time but that's part of the game, it's part of their tactics."

The relationship between the two sides over nine tests last year has sometimes been testy and Australia captain Michael Clarke was fined after the Brisbane match for suggesting James Anderson was about to suffer a broken limb.

The fifth test starts at the SCG on Friday.
